If you're familiar with the book, you'll be amazed to see how that book translates into something that's truly magical on the big screen.
This is by no means a "kid's movie". However, i think it's a "family movie". I think it's a movie adults will fall in love with while holding their little one's hand or feeling them rest there little head on your big adult shoulder, having them ask questions and react to the emotional truths this movie evokes from every child that experiences it. Trust me, I believe kids 5 and older WILL RELATE to what they see, and most importantly, to what they FEEL when watching this movie. Honestly, I think that a movie that can connect with kids on an emotional level is something rare and beautiful. No fart jokes, no toy tie-ins, no pandering to consumers. The movie holds you in a gentle and reassuring embrace, letting kids know "Hey, we remember what it's like being a kid. It isn't easy, but we'll always love you".
Josh and I saw the second showing yesterday, so we had the chance to see the crowd exit the screening before ours. Every parent was either holding their child's hand, touching their head, making some kind of physical connection with their child. They all looked happy with eachother. No screaming kids, no upset parents. Just a bunch of families loving one another and seemingly richer for having experienced something truly wonderful.
So, GO SEE THIS MOVIE! If you have a kid, TAKE THEM! If you don't, FIND ONE! Take a niece, a nephew, a cousin, a family friend. This is a movie that will make you feel like a kid again, but it becomes just that more awesome when you can share it with a kid.
Love you all! Be good to one another!
